School Culture

All members of the WHA community work together to create a school culture in which relationships are based on respect, collaboration and caring. In every classroom, students have opportunities for productive conversations, cooperative learning and meaningful decision making, thereby becoming active participants in the school community. Regular College & Career Readiness activities provide a forum for addressing social, emotional and ethical concerns. Students across grade levels enjoy regular opportunities for responsible community participation, both inside and outside the classroom.

Washington Heights Academy emphasizes social, emotional and ethical competencies as significant contributors to academic achievement. These competencies are further supported by our Schoolwide Instructional Focus: Cultivating a Growth Mindset through Culturally Responsive Instruction. As we work together to cultivate a Growth Mindset, all members of our school community will strive to embrace challenges, persevere in the face of setbacks, and regard effort as an essential path toward mastery. We encourage families to support children's Growth Mindset thinking at home!
